Potential Health Risks Of A Juice Cleanse

Despite all the benefits of a juice cleanse, there may be some potential risks for certain groups of people. Always consult your doctor if you attempt a juice detox longer than 3 days.

  • If you are diagnosed with kidney disorders, drinking large amounts of juice can cause kidney stones and other kidney problems due to acidic nature of certain types of juices. Especially juices that are made from dark, leafy greens and beets are high in oxalate.
  • Unpasteurized juices may contain bacteria which may contribute to certain illnesses. Especially young children and older people as well as those with weakened immune systems and chronic illnesses are at a grater risk of illness.
  • The reduced calorie intake during a juice detox can cause a person to experience symptoms relating to low blood sugar such as dehydration, weakness, shakiness, dizziness, fainting, headaches and hunger. Especially this can be dangerous for people with diabetes and hypoglycemia.
  • If your juice detox includes laxatives or other methods of bowel stimulation, you can lose a good amount of essential nutrients during the digestive process that can lead to dehydration and imbalanced electrolytes.
  • If you are going on a juice cleanse to lose weight, any weight you lose during a juice cleanse is mostly water weight and you are likely to regain it once you resume your regular diet.
